The dataset of ground truth measurements synchronizing with Envisat ASAR was obtained in No. 1 and 2 quadrates of the A'rou foci experimental area on Oct. 18, 2007 during the pre-observation period. The Envisat ASAR data were in AP mode and VV/VH polarization combinations, and the overpass time was approximately at 11:17 BJT. Both the quadrates were divided into 3×3 subsites, with each one spanning a 30×30 m2 plot. 25 sampling points were chosen, including centers and corners of each subsites. Simultaneous with the satellite overpass, numerous ground data were collected, soil volumetric moisture, soil conductivity, the soil temperature, and the real part of soil complex permittivity by the WET soil moisture sensor; the surface radiative temperature by the hand-held infrared thermometer; soil gravimetric moisture, volumetric moisture, and soil bulk density after drying by the cutting ring (100cm^3). Meanwhile, vegetation parameters as height, coverage and water content were also observed. Surface roughness was detailed in the "WATER: Surface roughness dataset in the A'rou foci experimental area". Those provide reliable ground data for retrieval and validation of soil moisture and freeze/thaw status from active remote sensing approaches.

The dataset of snow depth measured by the elevation-graduated snow sticks was obtained in the Binggou watershed foci experimental area from Nov. 11 to 16, 2007, during the pre-observation period. 51 snow-stakes (2m long) were arranged according to different topographic landscapes, such as the flat, ubac, tailo and partial shade, and the length above the ground was recorded. From Mar. 2 to Apr. 6, 2008, the intensive observation period, ten measurements (Mar. 2, Mar. 4, Mar. 9, Mar. 16, Mar. 19, Mar. 21, Mar. 23, Mar. 29, Apr. 1 and Apr. 6) were carried out both manually and additionally by the telescope for the snow depth around the snow-stakes. Two files including raw data and preprocessed snow depth data were archived. Those provide reliable data for snow spatial heterogeneity study and snow accumulation and melt monitoring in the Binggou watershed.

The dataset of intensive snow parameter measurements was obtained in the Binggou watershed foci experimental area on Mar. 11, 2008. Those provide reliable data for retrieval of snow parameters from remote sensing approaches. Observation items included the snow layer temperature by the probe thermometer, the snow grain size by the handheld microscope, snow density by the aluminum case, the snow surface temperature by the handheld infrared thermometer, and the snow-soil interface temperature by the handheld infrared thermometer in three plots in BG-Z. 4 points were selected and measured 4 times in each plot. Two files including raw data and preprocessed data (3 subfolders enclosed) on snow properties were archived; besides, profile pictures of each point were also included.

The dataset of snow spectral reflectance observations was obtained in the Binggou watershed foci experimental area on Mar. 23, 2008. Flat open space was chosen for the observations and observation items included: (1) Multi-angle snow spectrum by the observation platform made by BNU for snow bidirectional reflectance properties from 10:50-13:50 BJT; (2) Snow albedo by the total radiometer for its relationship with the solar altitude from 10:00-14:36 BJT; (3) The snow spectrum by the portable ASD (Xinjiang Meteorological Administration). Two files including raw data and the preprocessed data were archived.

Meanwhile, vegetation parameters as height, coverage and water content were also observed. Those provide reliable ground data for the development and validation of soil moisture, soil freeze/thaw algorithms and the forward model from active remote sensing approaches.

The dataset of snow spectral reflectance observations was obtained in the Binggou watershed foci experimental area from Dec. 5 to Dec. 15, 2007 during the pre-observation period. The aims of the measurements were to verify feasibility of the predetermined observation schemes and to collect data for retrieval from remote sensing approaches. All data were acquired by ASD spectrometer from Xinjiang Meteorological Administration. Observation items included: (1) Random observations on snow spectrum in the chosen snowpack at the Binggou cold region hydrometeorological station on Dec. 5, 6 and 7, 2007 (2) Snow spectrum observations in BG-A simultaneous with MODIS and Terra MISR on Dec. 10, 2007 (3) The pure and the mixed snow pixel spectrum in BG-A on Dec. 15, 2007 (4) Multi-angle snow spectrum in the chosen snowpack in BG-A on Dec. 15, 2007 Seven subfolders including raw data and pre-processed data are named after the acquisition time, Dec. 5, 2007, Dec. 6, 2007, Dec. 7, 2007, Dec. 10, 2007, Dec. 13, 2007, Dec. 15, 2007 and Dec. 15, 2007, respectively.

The dataset of ground truth measurements synchronizing with ALOS PALSAR was obtained in the Linze station foci experimental area on Jul. 10, 2008. The ALOS PALSAR data were in FBS mode and HH polarization combinations, and the overpass time was approximately at 23:39 BJT. Soil moisture (0-5cm) data were measured by the cutting ring method (50cm^3) in LY07 and LY08 quadrates (repeated nine times). The quadrate location information was listed in coordinates.xls and data were archived as Excel files. This data set includes the observation data of 25 water net sensor network nodes in Babao River Basin in the upper reaches of Heihe River from January 2015 to December 2015. 4cm and 20cm soil moisture / temperature is the basic observation of each node; some nodes also include 10cm soil moisture / temperature, surface infrared radiation temperature, snow depth and precipitation observation. The observation frequency is 5 minutes. The data set can be used for hydrological simulation, data assimilation and remote sensing verification. The dataset of ground truth measurements synchronizing with Envisat ASAR was obtained in C1, W2 and B2 of the Biandukou foci experimental area on Mar. 14, 2008, from 23:30 on 14 to 1:00 on 15, to be specific. The ASAR data were in AP mode and VV/VH polarization combinations, and the overpass time was approximately at 23:21 BJT. The wheat stubble land, the deep plowed land and the rape stubble land were chosen for measurements. (1) The surface radiative temperature and the physical temperature were measured by the handheld infrared thermometer. Besides, the land cover type was also recorded. The data can be opened by Microsoft Office. (2) The gravimetric soil moisture (samples from 0-1cm, 1-3cm, 3-5cm, 5-10cm and 10-20cm) was measured by the microwave drying method. (3) The frost depth by the chopstick and the ruler. The soil was considered frozen when it was hard and with ice crystal. The data can be opened by Microsoft Office. Four data files were included, ASAR data, C1, W2 and B2 data.

Observation items included: (1) Snow parameters including the snow surface temperature, the snow-soil interface temperature, the land surface temperature by the handheld infrared thermometer, the snow layer temperature by the probe thermometer, snow depth by the ruler and the snow grain size by the handheld microscope. The data set provided the cloudless Fractional Snow Cover area (FSC) time-series product basing on the MODIS data and covered the Heihe River Basin from January 2010 to December 2013. They also provide the high spatial (500 m) and temporal (1 day) resolution. Firstly, the end-member were automatically extracted by the fast autonomous spectral end-member determination (N-FINDR) maximizing volume iteration algorithm. Combining N-FINDR with the orthogonal subspace projection (OSP) approach, we propose an improved end-member extraction algorithm using a maximizing, volume-based iterative method. All the 6 end-members were extracted including snow, soil, water, bare land, vegetation, and cloud, respectively. Then, the 10-day spectral library time series based on prior knowledge of Heihe basin are built for 2009. The primary data were produced using the fully constrained least squares (FCLS) linear spectral mixture analysis method by the spectral library. Finally，the cubic spline interpolation algorithm were used to the eliminate the cloud pixels completely and obtain the data set. The data are validated by the fractional snow cover derived from Landsat imagery and the results indicate that the improved algorithm can obtain the end-member information accurately, and the retrieved fractional snow cover has better accuracy than the MODIS fractional snow-cover product (MOD10A1). So the data set can provide more accurate input for the hydrology and climate model.

The dataset of snow density measurements was obtained in the Binggou watershed foci experimental area on Dec. 6 and Dec. 10, 2007 during the pre-observation period, to survey the snow layer and acquire the snow density for retrieval and modeling from remote sensing approaches. Observation items included: (1) Snow layer density: measured by snow shovel weighing method. Each 10cm was a unit. (2) Snow density, snow depth, snow temperature, snow-soil interface temperature, and snow grain size in BG-A. Measured were carried out in BG-A on Dec. 6, 2007, and in BG-B, BG-C and BG-D on Dec. 10, 2007. The dataset includes raw data and processed data plus GPS and calibration data for the snow shovel.

The dataset of ground truth measurement synchronizing with ALOS PALSAR was obtained in the Linze grassland foci experimental area on Jun. 10, 2008. The data were in FBS mode and HH/HV polarization combinations, and the overpass time was approximately at 23:39 BJT. Observations were carried out in plots A, B, C, D and E, which were divided into 6×6 subsites, with each one spanning a 120×120 m2 plot. Soil gravimetric moisture, volumetric moisture, and soil bulk density after drying by the cutting ring and the mean soil temperature from 0-5cm by the probe thermometer were measured in A, B and C; the soil temperature, soil moisture, the loss tangent, soil conductivity, the real part and the imaginary part of soil complex permittivity by the POGO soil sensor, and the mean soil temperature from 0-5cm by the probe thermometer in D and E. Data were archived in Excel file. See WATER: Dataset of setting of the sampling plots and stripes in the foci experimental area of Linze station for more information.

The data set is the meteorological and observational data of hulugou shrub experimental area in the upper reaches of Heihe River, including meteorological data, albedo data and evapotranspiration data under shrubs. 1. Meteorological data: Qilian station longitude: 99 ° 52 ′ E; latitude: 38 ° 15 ′ n; altitude: 3232.3m, scale meteorological data from January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2013. Observation items include: temperature, humidity, vapor pressure, net radiation, four component radiation, etc. The data are daily scale data, and the calculation period is 0:00-24:00 2. Albedo: daily surface albedo data from January 1, 2012 to July 3, 2014, including snow and non snow periods. The measuring instrument is the radiation instrument on the 10m gradient tower in hulugou watershed. Among them, the data from August 4 to October 2, 2012 was missing due to instrument circuit problems, and the rest data quality was good 3. Evapotranspiration: surface evapotranspiration data of Four Typical Shrub Communities in hulugou watershed. The observation period is from July 18 to August 5, 2014, which is the daily scale data. The data include precipitation data, evaporation and infiltration data observed by lysimeter. The data set can be used to analyze the evapotranspiration data of alpine shrubs and forests. The evapotranspiration of grassland under canopy was measured by a small lysimeter with a diameter of 25 cm and a depth of 30 cm. Two lysimeters were set up in each shrub plot, and one lysimeter was set for each shrub in transplanting experiment. The undisturbed undisturbed soil column with the same height as the barrel is placed in the inner bucket, and the outer bucket is buried in the soil. During the embedding, the outer bucket shall be 0.5-1.0 cm higher than the ground, and the outer edge of the inner barrel shall be designed with a rainproof board about 2.0 cm wide to prevent surface runoff from entering the lysimeter. Lysimeter was set up in the nearby meteorological stations to measure grassland evapotranspiration, and a small lysimeter with an inner diameter of 25 cm and a depth of 30 cm was also set up in the sample plot of Picea crassifolia forest to measure the evaporation under the forest. All lysimeters are weighed at 20:00 every day (the electronic balance has a sensing capacity of 1.0 g, which is equivalent to 0.013 mm evaporation). Wind proof treatment should be taken to ensure the accuracy of measurement. Data processing method: evapotranspiration is mainly calculated by mass conservation in lysimeter method. According to the design principle of lysimeter lysimeter, evapotranspiration is mainly determined by the quality difference in two consecutive days. Since it is weighed every day, it is calculated by water balance.

The dataset of snow properties measured by the Snowfork was obtained in the Binggou watershed foci experimental area from Dec. 5-16 2007, during the pre-observation period. The aims of the measurements were to verify applicability of the instruments and to acquire snow parameters for simultaneous airborne, satellite-borne and ground-based remote sensing experiments and other control experiments. Observation items included: (1) physical quantities by direct observations: resonant frequency, the rate of attenuation and 3db bandwidth (2) physical quantities by indirect observations: snow density, snow complex permittivity (the real part and the imaginary part), snow volumetric moisture and snow gravimetric moisture. Five files including raw data and processed data are kept, data by the Snowfork on Dec 5, data by BG-A MODIS on Dec 6 and 7, data in BG-B, BG-C, BG-D and BG-E on Dec 10, and data in BG-D with the microwave radiometer on Dec 14 and 16.

This data is based on the daily surface temperature observation data of 15 regular meteorological stations in the heihe valley of China meteorological administration, and the annual surface freezing-thawing index of each meteorological station from 1960 to 2006 is calculated.
